What a Valley Mills arrest looks like

01

Arrest and transport

Police in Valley Mills, the McLennan County Sheriff and DPS all transport to the same detention center on East Highway 6 in Waco.

02

Booking

Fingerprints, photograph and property intake. This is where most of the waiting happens, and it is the stage nobody can shorten — including us.

03

Bail is set

Misdemeanors often follow a bail schedule and are known immediately. Felonies are set at magistration, usually within 24 hours of booking.

04

We post the bond

Once the amount is on the record and the agreement is signed, we file. Release then depends on the jail working through its queue.

Valley Mills straddles two counties

Valley Mills sits on the line between Bosque County and McLennan County, north-west of Waco on State Highway 6. Only part of the city is in McLennan County, and that decides which jail an arrest goes to.

The McLennan side is booked into the McLennan County Detention Center on East Highway 6 in Waco. The Bosque side goes to the county jail in Meridian instead — a different facility, a different clerk and a different queue. Ask which county the arrest was in before anyone drives anywhere.

Who patrols the city, and what its court covers

The city was incorporated in 1896 and runs its own police department and municipal court. The sheriff’s offices of both counties and the Department of Public Safety cover the roads around it.

The municipal court handles Class C misdemeanors and citations, settled with the court directly. We write felony and Class A and B misdemeanor bonds, and our smallest bond is $1,000. Call and describe the charge and we will tell you which side of the line you are on.
